Life changes after turning 80!

Late last year, 2024, I turned 80. Frankly it was anticlimactic. It is though, a milestone, as I have now surpassed the biblical constraints of Psalm 90:10 – “The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty.” Some things are more difficult. For instance, I now have hearing aids and on occasion I use a cane as my balance is deteriorating. My body is probably good for another ten years or so. I have legally made note of my desire not to be sustained by machines nor to have horrible treatments for life threatening diseases. I am content and I know where I am going. God is good and his promises are sure.

On May 18, 2025, I retired as dean of the Anglican Cathedral of the Good Shepherd in Lima, Peru. I have in fact spent the last eighteen months training my successor, Fr. Bliss R. Spillar III, who is now the dean and I am “emeritus.” Bishop Jorge Agiuilar has developed a plan to harness the experience of his retiring clergy such as myself. I was appointed, the first of what we pray will become a team of experienced clergy. “CLÉRIGO EMÉRITO-CONSEJERO-MENTOR” is our role, responsibility and title. This is part of a three stage plan for leadership in the Anglican Church of Peru. The first is “PREPARATION FOR LEADERSHIP. The second stage is LEADERSHIP IN ACTION. The third stage I have titled LEADERSHIP IN RETIREMENT as CONSEJEROS or MENTORS. Bishop Jorge intends for us to come alongside the younger clergy as they learn on the job. We will participate actively in the councils of the Diocese of Peru.

This means that I continue to be an Associate Missionary of SAMS-USA (Society of Anglican Missionaries and senders). It means that my role as an intercessor in prayer has increased. It also means that my travel will be reduced as I am able to fulfil this role using such tools as Zoom and WhatsApp. It is a joy and privilege to be able to continue in this role. “God is not finished with me yet!”
